Build a disciplined CDL inspection routine for the steering wheel, linkage, power steering, axles, leaf springs, air suspension and defect reporting before the truck moves.
Steering and suspension defects change where the truck goes
Steering components translate a driver's input into wheel movement; suspension components keep axles located, manage load and help tires stay in controlled contact with the road. A loose steering joint, shifted spring or deflated air bag can affect lane control, braking stability, tire wear and clearance. Treat unusual play, pull, lean, noise or fluid loss as evidence to investigate—not as a personality of the truck.
Begin with the driver's federal duty
49 CFR 396.13 requires a driver to be satisfied that the vehicle is in safe operating condition before driving, review the last driver vehicle inspection report when required and acknowledge required repairs. The pre-trip is not a substitute for a qualified mechanic's inspection. It is the driver's structured opportunity to find visible defects, test safe functions and stop an unsafe vehicle from entering traffic.
Inspect from a stable, safe position
Park on firm, level ground when possible, secure the vehicle and use three points of contact. Never crawl beneath a vehicle supported only by air suspension or a jack, and never place a hand inside a joint while another person moves the steering wheel. Use a flashlight and an approved helper procedure from outside pinch zones. Wheel chocks, lifting and under-vehicle inspection must follow fleet safety rules.
Start at the steering wheel
Confirm the wheel is firmly attached and has no spoke cracked through or missing. Check the horn and observe whether the column, tilt or telescoping mechanism moves unexpectedly. From the normal driving position, note free movement before the steer tires begin to respond. Federal limits vary by steering-wheel diameter and whether the system is manual or powered, so use the table in 49 CFR 393.209 rather than a single universal number.
Understand steering lash without guessing
Steering lash is the movement at the rim before the road wheels respond. Measure only with the engine and system in the condition specified by the carrier or manufacturer, on a safe surface and with a trained helper when needed. Excessive free play, a change from the truck's normal response or delayed movement on one side can indicate wear or looseness. Do not mask the problem by gripping the wheel harder or constantly correcting the lane position.
Check the column, gearbox and mounting
The steering column must be securely fastened. Inspect visible mounting points, brackets and the steering gear for looseness, missing hardware, cracks, fresh movement marks and leakage. The federal rule prohibits loose or missing steering-gear mounting bolts and cracks in the gear box or mounting brackets. A pitman arm must not be loose on the output shaft. Report any movement between a component and its mount.
Trace the steering linkage
Follow the visible steering path through shafts, universal joints, pitman arm, drag link, steering arms, tie rod and ball-and-socket joints. Look for loose or missing fasteners, damaged retaining devices, bent parts, cracked boots, displaced seals and contact with hoses, wiring or frame components. Under 49 CFR 393.209, universal joints and ball-and-socket joints may not be worn, faulty or repaired by welding.
Inspect power steering as a complete system
Check the reservoir level only by the manufacturer's procedure and inspect the pump, hoses, fittings, cooler and steering gear for wetness or active leakage. Look for loose or broken parts and for a belt that is frayed, cracked or slipping when the system uses one. The federal rule requires power-steering components to be operating, secure, intact, leak-free and supplied with sufficient fluid. Never open a hot or pressurized system.
Perform a controlled steering function check
With adequate clearance and according to fleet procedure, turn the wheel smoothly through the usable range and listen for binding, grinding, popping, pump noise or contact. Confirm that the wheel does not lock, catch or require abruptly different effort left versus right. Do not hold power steering hard against a stop. If the tires, steering shaft or linkage approach another component, stop the test and report the interference.
Read tire evidence carefully
Uneven shoulder wear, feathering, cupping and rapid wear can point to alignment, steering, suspension, inflation or balance problems, but tread appearance alone does not diagnose the cause. Compare both steer tires and dual positions, look for fresh rubbing and verify inflation and load conditions. Record the wear pattern and location so maintenance can measure alignment and components instead of replacing a tire without addressing the underlying problem.
Inspect axle positioning and alignment clues
49 CFR 393.207 states that axle-positioning parts may not be cracked, broken, loose or missing and that axles must be properly aligned. From a safe position, compare axle and wheel placement, inspect torque rods, radius rods, hangers and visible fasteners, and look for shiny movement marks or contact. A trailer that appears dog-tracked, a steering wheel that no longer centers or rapid tire scrub needs qualified evaluation.
Check leaf springs and their supports
Inspect spring leaves for cracks, breaks, missing sections and displacement. Check hangers, shackles, spring eyes, bushings, U-bolts and axle seats for damage, looseness and movement. Federal rules prohibit a cracked, broken, missing or shifted leaf spring. A broken leaf can be hidden within a pack, so view both ends and both sides where safely accessible and compare ride height across the axle.
Check coil springs and torsion components
Where equipped, inspect coil springs for cracks or breaks and verify they are seated correctly. Inspect visible torsion bars and mounts for cracks, breaks, looseness or contact. Do not confuse surface rust with a fracture, but do not dismiss a line that opens under load or shows fresh metal. The repair decision should be made by qualified maintenance personnel using the vehicle manufacturer's limits.
Inspect air springs, valves and ride height
Look for cuts, abrasion, exposed cord, folds, debris, loose mounting, damaged pistons and air leakage at bags, lines and fittings. The vehicle should not tilt left or right under normal operating conditions. Federal rules also address the suspension regulator valve and allowable leakage. A truck that settles rapidly, leans, rides on a suspension stop or cannot maintain normal height should not be treated as ready simply because brake air pressure builds.
Know the air-suspension control risk
Dump valves and lift-axle controls change ride height, axle loading and clearance. Confirm controls return to the correct travel position and that warning devices work as designed. 49 CFR 393.207 limits controls that can exhaust one axle of a two-axle air-suspension trailer unless specified safeguards apply. Drivers should follow the vehicle and carrier procedure and never travel at road speed with a suspension dumped for dock height.
Separate symptoms from a road test diagnosis
Pulling, wandering, vibration, a crooked wheel or repeated correction may come from steering, suspension, tires, brakes, load distribution, road crown or wind. A driver should report when and how the symptom occurs—speed, braking, load, road and direction—without declaring a part defective from the cab. If control is uncertain, reduce risk, stop safely and contact maintenance rather than conducting an improvised high-speed test.
Write a defect report maintenance can act on
Identify the unit, axle and side, then describe the component, condition and effect: for example, right-front tie-rod boot torn with visible looseness during an approved helper check, or left-rear air spring leaking and vehicle leaning after pressure stabilizes. Photographs can support the report but do not replace it. Under 49 CFR 396.11, report safety-affecting defects discovered or reported to the driver and close the repair-review loop before operation.
Use a final steering-and-suspension checklist
Before release of the brakes, confirm the steering wheel and column are secure; lash is within the applicable limit; visible linkage, joints, fasteners and gearbox are intact; power steering has proper fluid and no leak; axle-positioning parts are secure; springs are present and aligned; air bags and lines hold normal height; tires show no new contact; and reported defects have been reviewed. When uncertain, keep the vehicle parked for qualified inspection.
