Inspect commercial-truck tires with a repeatable system covering tread, pressure, sidewalls, dual spacing, valves, load and speed limits, warning signs, and safe defect reporting.
Tires are a before-dispatch safety decision
Federal rules prohibit driving a commercial motor vehicle unless the driver is satisfied that required equipment, including tires, is in good working order. A quick walk-around is not enough when a tractor, trailer, bus, or straight truck has many wheel positions and different loads. Use the same sequence at every inspection, document defects through the carrier's process, and do not let a schedule turn an uncertain tire into a roadside failure.
Know the federal minimums
Under 49 CFR 393.75, tires on the front wheels of a bus, truck, or truck tractor must have at least 4/32 inch tread depth in a major groove. Other covered tires must have at least 2/32 inch. Measurements are taken in major tread grooves and not at tie bars, humps, or fillets. These are legal minimums, not maintenance targets; a carrier may establish earlier replacement criteria based on application, wear pattern, season, or manufacturer guidance.
Start with the steering axle
Give steering tires an uninterrupted inspection because a failure can immediately affect directional control. Check tread depth across the face, irregular wear, exposed belt or ply, cuts, bulges, sidewall separation, objects, valve condition, rim damage, and evidence of leakage. Confirm that the tire type and condition comply with the vehicle and carrier requirements. Federal rules place specific limits on certain regrooved tires on front wheels and prohibit regrooved, recapped, or retreaded tires on the front wheels of a bus.
Inspect every drive and trailer position
Walk close enough to see the full visible tread and sidewall, then examine the inside dual and inward-facing sidewalls with a light or mirror when necessary and safe. Look for flat spots, scalloping, shoulder wear, cuts, penetrations, missing chunks, exposed material, separation, heat damage, and debris trapped between duals. A clean outer tire does not prove the inner tire is sound. Repeat the sequence axle by axle so no position disappears into a general glance.
Measure pressure with the right reference
Inflation must support the load being carried. Section 393.75 prohibits operation when cold pressure is below the pressure specified for that load and provides a correction method when recent operation has heated the tire. Use a calibrated gauge suitable for the pressure range, the carrier's tire and load documentation, and manufacturer information. Do not substitute the maximum sidewall marking for the correct operating pressure or bleed a hot tire merely because its warm reading is above the cold target.
Pressure and load work together
Underinflation increases flexing and heat, while overload can exceed the tire's carrying capacity even when the gauge appears normal. Federal rules generally prohibit carrying more weight on a tire than its marked or referenced load rating, subject to limited special-permit provisions. Compare the tire, rim, axle, and vehicle ratings with the actual configuration and load. A legal gross weight does not guarantee that every tire or axle is correctly loaded.
Read wear patterns as diagnostic evidence
Wear concentrated on both shoulders may point toward sustained underinflation or loading issues; center wear may be associated with excessive pressure for the application; one-sided or feathered wear can indicate alignment, suspension, steering, or axle problems; cupping can involve balance, shock, bearing, or suspension conditions. A driver should report the pattern rather than diagnose beyond training. Photograph it when the carrier permits and maintenance needs context.
Check dual spacing and matching
Dual tires need adequate clearance and compatible dimensions so their sidewalls do not rub and one tire does not carry a disproportionate share of the load. Look between the duals for contact marks, lodged objects, unequal inflation, mismatched diameter, and heat. A low or smaller tire beside a properly inflated tire changes load distribution. Do not reach between tires or under the vehicle unless the equipment is secured and the carrier's safe procedure authorizes it.
Valve stems, caps, rims, and hubs matter
Inspect valve stems for damage, looseness, bending, leaks, and contact with nearby components. Use appropriate sealing caps and confirm extension hardware is supported and accessible. At the wheel, check rims for cracks or deformation, lug areas for movement indicators or rust trails, and hubs for leakage. Tire pressure systems and visual indicators can support inspection, but they do not replace verification of the tire, wheel, and hardware.
Defects that prohibit operation
Section 393.75 prohibits operation on a tire with exposed body ply or belt material, tread or sidewall separation, a flat condition or audible leak, or a cut that exposes ply or belt material. These are not wait-until-the-next-service items. Stop the dispatch or move only under qualified instructions that comply with the law and protect personnel. Never stand in the trajectory area of a suspected high-pressure tire or wheel assembly.
Respect speed restrictions and heat
A speed-restricted tire marked with a maximum of 55 mph or less may not be operated above its rated limit. Even without that marking, speed, load, inflation, ambient temperature, road surface, and continuous operation influence heat. FMCSA has warned commercial operators about failures associated with excessive speed, front-axle loading, and equipment utilization. During trips, use stops to look, listen, smell, and compare wheel positions without touching a potentially hot tire or wheel.
Respond to a suspected tire problem on the road
Hold the steering wheel firmly, avoid abrupt inputs, reduce speed under control, activate warning signals as appropriate, and move to a safe stopping location when the vehicle remains controllable. Once stopped, protect the scene under applicable rules and call the carrier or roadside provider. Do not crawl under an inadequately protected vehicle, attempt an unsafe roadside repair, or continue because the tire still holds some air.
Document defects clearly
Report the unit, axle, wheel position, tire condition, measured pressure or tread depth when safely obtained, time, location, warning symptoms, and any photographs permitted by policy. Describe what you observed instead of writing only 'bad tire.' If maintenance determines that immediate repair is unnecessary, follow the carrier's documented process. Do not alter a record or accept a verbal instruction that conflicts with a clear out-of-service defect.
Build an en-route and post-trip routine
Recheck tires after loading changes, severe impacts, construction zones, extreme temperature shifts, or any vibration, pull, noise, or pressure alert. At post-trip, look for damage and wear that developed during the run so the next driver is not surprised at dispatch. For combination vehicles, inspect the tractor and every trailer or dolly segment. Annual and scheduled maintenance do not eliminate the driver's responsibility to notice developing defects.
A practical 60-second axle checklist
At each axle, scan tread depth and pattern, exposed material, cuts and bulges, inflation and sidewall shape, valve hardware, dual spacing, embedded objects, rim and fasteners, hub leakage, and nearby components that could contact the tire. Compare left and right positions for unusual differences. If any condition is uncertain, slow the process down and use a gauge, light, tread tool, carrier procedure, or qualified technician before driving.
