NHTSA Recall Covers 850 Mack Tanker-Package Trucks Over Braking Software

October 11, 2026 11 min read

NHTSA campaign 26V620 covers 850 model-year 2026–2027 Mack Anthem and Pioneer trucks whose tanker-package software can miscalculate axle loads and reduce braking performance.

NHTSA lists campaign 26V620000

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's recall data identify Mack Trucks campaign 26V620000, manufacturer recall SC0500. NHTSA received the manufacturer's report on September 28, 2026, and lists 850 potentially affected vehicles.

The recall covers two Mack models

The affected population includes certain model-year 2026–2027 Mack Anthem AN (4) and Pioneer PR (4) vehicles. The campaign does not cover every Anthem or Pioneer; the NHTSA summary limits it to trucks equipped with a tanker application package.

The issue is an inaccurate axle-load calculation

According to NHTSA, the tanker-package software can calculate axle loads inaccurately. The agency's component classification is electric service brakes, software/programming. The condition is associated with transporting smoothbore tanker trailers.

Reduced braking can lengthen stopping distance

NHTSA states that the calculation error may reduce braking performance while the covered trucks transport smoothbore tanker trailers. The agency says the resulting greater stopping distance increases crash risk. The recall summary does not say that every covered truck has already experienced the condition.

Dealers will install corrective software at no charge

The listed remedy is new software that disables the dynamic trailer braking calculations. Mack dealers will perform the software installation free of charge. Owners should follow the manufacturer and dealer instructions for the specific VIN rather than attempting to alter braking software themselves.

Owner letters are expected November 27

NHTSA says owner-notification letters are expected to be mailed November 27, 2026. The agency also states that VINs involved in the recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on October 5. A carrier can therefore check assigned trucks before a mailed letter arrives.

VIN confirmation matters more than model name alone

Two trucks with the same model badge and model year may not share the same configuration or recall status. Fleet managers should use the VIN lookup, keep the search result or manufacturer communication with the maintenance file and confirm remedy completion through an authorized Mack dealer.

Inspection alone cannot verify a software fix

A normal pre-trip or annual inspection remains necessary for visible and functional brake conditions, but it cannot prove that the recall software has been installed. The repair record, dealer confirmation and VIN status are the relevant evidence for completion of this campaign.

Tanker fleets should identify exposure before dispatch

Carriers using Mack Anthem or Pioneer tractors with tanker packages should screen their fleet by VIN, flag covered equipment, contact the dealer and plan the remedy. Dispatch and safety teams should also ensure drivers know how to report braking concerns and preserve any relevant maintenance or event records.

Drivers should respond to braking symptoms safely

A driver who notices reduced braking effectiveness, unexpected braking behavior, a warning message or another safety concern should slow and stop at a safe location, notify the carrier and follow the applicable defect-reporting and repair process. Do not continue operating a vehicle that is unsafe simply because a dealer appointment is pending.

The campaign is not a stop-drive order for every listed truck

The NHTSA recall entry identifies a free software remedy and a future owner-letter date. It does not label the entire population with a universal park-outside or do-not-drive instruction. Carriers should follow any VIN-specific instructions from NHTSA, Mack or the servicing dealer and make an independent safe-operation decision when a defect is present.

Primary-source note

This report uses NHTSA's recall API and the agency's October 10, 2026 bulk recall dataset for campaign 26V620000. The affected models and years, 850-vehicle population, software condition, stopping-distance consequence, free remedy, November 27 mailing date and October 5 VIN-search date are attributed to NHTSA. CDL Truck Pro has not expanded the recall beyond the tanker-package population or treated the listing as proof that every covered truck has exhibited reduced braking.
