Blue Bird Body Company filed a Part 573 safety recall report for 18,248 potentially involved Vision school buses. The report carries NHTSA recall number 26V519 and manufacturer recall number R26AG. It estimates that one percent of the recall population has the defect; that estimate does not reduce the need to check every VIN covered by the campaign.
The population spans model years 2021 through 2027
The filing identifies certain Blue Bird Vision school buses produced from October 28, 2021 through July 23, 2026. The vehicle list includes spark-ignition, compression-ignition and battery-electric configurations across different model years. Model name or fuel type alone cannot establish inclusion; owners should use the VIN and the manufacturer's recall instructions.
An unfused 12-volt wire may be damaged by abrasion
According to Blue Bird's report, affected buses may have an unfused 12V power wire on the C-Zone or D-Zone harness. Contact with body-component edges can abrade the wire over time. The company says that abrasion can lead to overheating and a short to ground.
The defect can disrupt safety-critical lighting
NHTSA's filing says heat from a short could affect surrounding harness wires and disrupt front warning lights, marker lights, rear brake lights, reverse lights, license-plate lights or rear warning lights. Losing one or more of those signals can make the bus harder for other road users to understand and increases crash risk.
The report describes warning signs for drivers
Blue Bird says a driver may hear an abnormal noise from the short, smell melting plastic or see melting around wire molding or a wire cover. The report directs a driver who encounters those warnings to pull over and power off the vehicle. A school-bus operator should also follow the fleet's emergency, passenger-protection and notification procedures rather than attempting an improvised electrical repair.
Blue Bird reported seven warranty claims
The chronology states that Blue Bird received field complaints involving thermal stress of the C-Zone body harness in April 2026 and investigated rubbing of the power wire in May. The manufacturer reported seven warranty claims submitted between May 2023 and June 2026 and said it was not aware of any injury or death related to the issue.
The company says the event is contained around non-combustible material
Blue Bird's chronology says its July review ruled out the risk of a thermal event because the C- and D-Zone harnesses are contained within and around non-combustible materials and sparks would be contained. The safety committee nevertheless determined on August 5 that the issue affects safety-critical components and decided it required a safety recall.
The remedy adds an in-line fuse and checks for rubbing
The recall remedy calls for a Blue Bird dealer or owner to retrofit the C- and D-Zone wire harnesses with an in-line fuse. Specified areas will also be inspected for a rubbing condition and mitigated when necessary. If the added fuse later blows, the harness is to be traced for a short and repaired or replaced.
Dealer and owner notices are planned by October 9
The Part 573 report says dealer and owner notifications are to be issued on or before October 9, 2026, with a remedy available when the recall is released. That date is a planned notification deadline, not proof that every affected bus has already been repaired or that a particular owner has received a letter.
VIN verification is more reliable than a model-year guess
Fleet managers should check the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and Blue Bird's official process, document the result and schedule the authorized remedy when the vehicle is included. A bus outside the listed model years is not automatically subject to this campaign, while a bus within the range is not confirmed affected until the VIN record or manufacturer communication says so.
Do not bypass the circuit or substitute an informal repair
The federal filing defines a specific fuse retrofit, inspection and follow-up process. Drivers and maintenance staff should not replace it with a larger fuse, bypass, unapproved wire routing or a reset that leaves the abrasion source unresolved. Repairs should follow the recall instructions and applicable electrical, school-bus and fleet-safety procedures.
Daily inspections still matter before recall completion
Before operation, drivers should confirm that required exterior and school-bus warning lights function and report odors, noises, visible heat damage or intermittent lighting immediately. A normal pretrip check cannot prove that hidden wiring will remain safe, and it does not replace the recall remedy. A failed or suspect safety function should be evaluated under the carrier's out-of-service and maintenance process before the bus returns to service.
The recall does not cover every Blue Bird electrical concern
Recall 26V519 addresses the identified C- and D-Zone harness condition in the defined population. It is not a diagnosis for every lighting fault, battery warning or electrical odor on every Blue Bird bus. Separate defects, campaigns and service information may apply, so owners should search by VIN and obtain qualified troubleshooting when symptoms do not match this recall.
