How to Compare CDL Job Offers Beyond CPM

August 20, 2026 7 min read

Compare miles, detention pay, bonuses, benefits, home time, and real weekly earnings.

CPM is only one part of pay

Ask how many paid miles comparable drivers receive, which mileage system is used, and whether empty miles are paid at the same rate.

List paid and unpaid activity

Compare detention, layover, stop, breakdown, orientation, loading, unloading, and safety pay. Estimate a realistic weekly total.

Value home time and benefits

Health coverage, retirement contributions, paid time off, equipment quality, route predictability, and reliable home time all affect the real value of an offer.

Get the offer in writing

Request the compensation structure, route type, classification, bonus conditions, and repayment obligations before making a commitment.
